Kenmare Guide

 

Kenmare is the Jewel in the Ring of Kerry.

Originally Kenmare was called Neidin (little nest)

There are Two large Streets in Kenmare

The shops and houses here are very colourful.

Main Street which runs from the Square to Shelbourne Street.

The Square is the Centre of the town.

There is a FREE map available from the Tourist Office or from Your B&B

There you will find Banks,Pubs,Tourist Office and many other shops and a Market every Wednesday.

Main Street has Supermarkets Jewellers,bookshops,clothes and Beauty Shops and restaurants.

Henry Street has many gift shops,numerous restaurants and an antiques shop and a Pet shop,

There are also hardware stores,a wine shop and a Musical Instrument shop and a Health Food Store.

A larger supermarket is just on the edge of town past the Catholic Church near the Town Green.

There are several shops in that area and a modern Doctors practice upstairs from the supermarket.

Petrol Stations are on te road to Molls Gap (Whites+) ad one opposite the Kenmare Golf Club (Macs)

You can get snack meals at both petrol stations and at most of the smaller supermarkets

Make sure you have enough petrol as sometimes petrol stations are far apart.

There are Two Churches :
The Catholic Church is near the Town Square and there is a lovely convent beside it.

The Protestant Church is on Bell Heights up the hill from the Post Office.

Most of the Pubs provide excellent Bar food.

Things to see:

The Stone Circle - a Neolithic stone circle at the end of Market Street.

Across the river from there is Cromwells Bridge and a Delightul Holy Well .

The Tourist office is in the Court Building just on the Square.

The Hospital is near the Supervalue Supermarket and up the hill to the left.

Walks you can do :

The Kerry Way is well signposted from the Town Centre. It can be dificult and overgrown in parts.

The Old Kenmare to Killarney Road is a little tougher but has rewarding views and is now mainly a footpath

To go on that Ramble go from the square past the Catholic Church and then past Supervalue Supermarket and carry on up the hill.
